Military Canteen Accessory Cooking Inserts

Here is a design for a percolator for a military canteen used to brew ground coffee over the fire.  This is good for those who like their coffee strong.  I also added a simple design for a nesting small cup and a steamer basket.  This two can nest together and placed on top of the canteen as a cover.  It can be used as a extra small cup, mixing cup, ingredient container or as a baking dish when the canteen is used as an oven.  The strainer or steamer basket can nest inside the small cup.  It can be used to drain water from food, as a pasta strainer or as a vegetable steamer.

Basketball Dice - Sport Dice Series

Basketball Dice

This game was designed with simple rules and equipment.  The game basic equipment requires only ten six sided dice (d6) to play the game.  The 16 mm dice are standard dice, but the 8 mm dice would be best for travel or on a camping trip.  You can add 2 disposable cups and a game board, a basketball coach clipboard or a basketball court drawn on a cardboard,  to complete the equipment for the game.  The game is divided into 4 periods with each period consisting of 5 or 10 possession for each player.  On each possession, one player is the offense and the other player is the defense.  To pick who start as the offense player, each player roll one die each with the highest amount of pips (dots) gets possession at the start of the game.  Each possession is divided into three parts.  The first part of the play is the  "inbound of the ball" where the offense brings the ball to play and the defense blocks it.  The second part is the offense "drive to the basket," if the defense can't block the offense, then the offense shoot at the basket to score. And the third part is the back court, in case the defense can steal the ball from the offense and make a drive for the basket at the opposite end of the court and the offense becomes the defender.

BEFORE THE START OF THE PLAY

-) Offense choose how many dice to roll to inbound the ball and how many dice to reserve to guard the back court. (Example: Offense choose four dice to inbound the ball and make a scoring drive to the basket and one die to guard the back court)

-) Defense choose how many dice to roll to block the ball as the offense inbound it and how many to reserve to guard the basket. (Example: Defense choose three dice to block the inbound drive to the basket and two dice to guard the basket)


1st PART OF THE POSSESSION - INBOUND THE BALL

-) Offense shakes and rolls the dice in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to inbound the ball.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.

-) Defense shakes and rolls the dice in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to block the ball.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.


1st PART MATCH UP

-) Offense remove the cup and arrange the dice from highest to lowest pip (dot) value.

-) Defense remove the cup and arrange the dice from highest to lowest pip (dot) value.

-) When matched up, If a die of the defense is the same amount of pips (dots) as the offense, then both dice are removed from play and put on the side.  Any dice of the offense with the same amount of pips (dots) are also removed from play. The defense can use higher pip count die to remove one of the offense lower pip count die.  (Example: Offense Dice are 5-5-4-3 and defense are 6-5-3-1.  In the match up stage, the defense 5 remove both of the offense 5 or the defense use a 6 to remove the offense 4)

-) Keep matching all the dice until all the offense's dice are removed from play or the remaining defense's dice are lower pip (dot) value than the offense's dice.  (Example: Offense dice are 5-5-4-3 and defense are 5-4-3-1.  In the match up the defense 5 remove both of the offense 5, defense 4 remove the offense 4 and the defense 3 remove offense 3 for a block)

-) When the offense and the defense plays the same number of dice and all the defense dice are one pip (dot) or more higher than the offense when matched together, the defense has stolen the ball.  The players switched position with the defense becoming the offense.  Proceed to 3rd Part for a fast break to the opposing basket to shoot and score.  (Example: Offense's dice are 5-5-4-3 and defense are 6-6-5-4.  In the match up the defense beats all the offense's dice with higher dice values and have stolen the ball from the offense.  Using the 3rd part, the defense stealing the ball use his reserved dice for a fast break to try to score at the opposing player's basket.)

-) The remaining offense's dice move to 2nd part of the possession.


2nd PART OF THE POSSESSION - SCORING DRIVE TO THE BASKET

-) Offense shakes and rolls the remaining dice in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to make drive at the basket to score.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.

-) Defense shakes and rolls the reserve dice guarding the basket in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to block the drive to the basket.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.


2nd PART MATCH UP

-) Offense remove the cup and arrange the dice from highest to lowest pip (dot) value.

-) Defense remove the cup and arrange the dice from highest to lowest amount of pips (dots).

-) If one die of the offense is higher than the defense then the offense was able to make a clear shot at the basket.  Offense roll one die to see if he scored.

-) When the offense and the defense plays the same number of dice and all the defense dice are one pip (dot) or more higher than the offense when matched together, the defense has stolen the ball.  The players switched position with the defense becoming the offense.  Proceed to 3rd Part  fast break to the opposing basket with the defense using one die for a fast break to try to score at the opposing player's basket.

-) Shooting The Ball At The Basket
    -) A result of one to three means offense missed the basket.
    -) A result of four to five means offense scored two points.
    -) A result of six means offense scored three points.


3rd PART OF THE GAME - FAST BREAK TO THE OPPOSING BASKET

-) The former defense, now the offense, shakes and rolls the reserved dice guarding the basket or one die, if the ball was stolen on the 2nd part of the game, in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to make a scoring drive at the opposing basket.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.

-) The former offense now the defense shake and roll the reserve dice guarding the back court in the cup and turn it over on top of the table or game board to block the fast break drive to the basket.  Do not remove the cup.  Keep the dice covered.


3rd PART MATCH UP

-) If one die of the new offense, the former defense, is higher than the defense guarding the back court then the offense was able to make a clear shot at the basket.  Offense roll one die to see if he scored.

-) When the offense and the defense plays the same number of dice and all the defense dice are one pip (dot) value higher than the offense when matched together, the defense has stolen the ball.  The players switched position with the defense becoming the offense.  Proceed to 3rd Part.  (Example: Offense's die is 5 and defense is 6.  In the match up the defense beats all the offense's dice with higher dice values and have stolen the ball from the offense.  Using the 3rd part, the defense stealing the ball use one die for a fast break to try to score at the opposing player's basket.)

-) If the offense or defense dice have three of a kind, then it committed a personal foul and the opposing player shoot two free throw for one point each.  If the die rolled for the free throw is one to two then the free throw missed the basket and a roll of three to six means the ball went into the basket for a score of one point.  The offense possession play is over and players switch side for the next possession. (Example: 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3, etc)

-) If the offense or defense dice have four of a kind, then it committed a personal foul and a technical foul and the opposing player shoots three free throw for one point each.  If the die rolled for the free throw is one to two then the free throw missed the basket and a roll of three to six means the ball went into the basket for a score of one point.  The offense possession play is over and players switch side for the next possession.  (Example: 1-1-1-1, 2-2-2-2, 3-3-3-3, etc)

-) If both offense and defense has three of a kind, four of a kind or five of a kind then both fouls are canceled and play resume with the current dice.  If one has three of a kind and the other has four of a kind then the former shoots a free throw only for the technical foul.  If one has three of a kind and the other has five of a kind then the former shoots two free throw for the personal foul.  If one has four of a kind and and the opponent has five of a kind then the former shoot for one free throw for a technical foul.

DICE STACKING

-) If a dice lands on top of another dice while being rolled then those two dice counts as one die when matching up.  It is called double team the opponent.  The pip value can be from two to twelve.

Pot Lid Lifter

Here is my design for a metal pot lid lifter.  You carry the lifter and you carve a long stick to fit the hole to use it.  It is a simple design, but it help when checking if your pot is boiling when on the camp fire.  You can also carve a piece of wood to make it instead of using metal, but it would be easier to notch the lifting stick to lift the lid.  You can also  use an old pen detachable clip.  Just bent the clip to the desired curl or angle and attach a long stick through the hole.

Portable Canvas Top Camp Kitchen Table

Here is my take on the portable camp kitchen table.  I saw one online, but it looks a little bulky.  If you are willing to carve your own wood legs, you only carry the canvas top and the wood center piece.  I would make mine 18 inches x 18 inches and make the table legs shorter.  It would mean you have to change the angle of the hole in the center piece to make it low enough to be near your camp fire.  You don't have to stand up and all the items are kept off the ground.  You can save weight in your back pack by leaving the center piece at home and tie the four legs together in the middle with a cord. Open the legs and place them in the table pockets.

Neck Pouch

Here is pouch that you can use when you wear a neck knife.  It allows you to carry aluminum foil for boiling water and thin plastic sheet to waterproof a shelter on the neck pouch along with your neck knife survival kit.  It also spread the load on your neck and make it more comfortable to use a neck knife.  Making it with orange material gives you a way to be visible.

Chicken Adobo

Chicken Adobo

One of the staples in my house when I was growing up was adobo.  It was an easy to fix and cook Filipino food..  My Mom with four kids to watch over makes adobo whenever she was short on time.  You can make adobo with almost any type of meat.  The main ones are chicken, pork and beef.  I would think that it might also work for mutton, lambs or goat.  I know they also make adobo with fish and frog legs.  I heard they also make it with beetles in some of the provinces back in the old country.

My Mom would always cook adobo when we go on a family road trip.  It was normal when we travel that we have a pot of rice and a pot of adobo in the car.  When lunch time comes around, we would stop at a rest stop and break out the rice and adobo.  It was cheaper to eat my Mom's home cooked meal than to eat in a restaurant.  It was also economical because family trips includes everyone plus all the friends and a few neighbors.

One funny story I have with adobo was with my old boss, Sue.  She loves adobo so much that everyone would bring her adobo to try.  One day she got the recipe and tried to cook it at her home.  She reported the adobo taste great, but she was perplexed why the sauce was not brown like the ones her co-workers bring her.  She solved it by putting food coloring in the adobo. Case solved. Oh my goodness.

I consider adobo a good camping food.  It lend itself to camping or bushcrafting, because of the few ingredients required and how easy to cook it.  It think it would work well with rabbit, squirrel, boar and deer.  I think it would be great to try trout adobo.  It also does not need refrigeration once cooked and can be kept for a few days.  Adobo taste the best on the second day, since it had the time for the meat to absorb the flavor.  It taste great.



Chicken Adobo

  • 1 chicken (about 3 pounds), cut into pieces or 8 chicken legs (about 4 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  • 2 bay leaves
Combine the chicken, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, peppercorns and bay leaves.  Put in high heat and let it come to a boil.  Lower the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stir occasionally.  Remove the lid and reduce the sauce until thickened and chicken is tender for another 20 minutes.  Serve with steamed white rice or brown rice.

If you can marinate the chicken adobo in the refrigerator for a few hours after combining the ingredients and before cooking it, it would taste even better.  There are so many ways to make adobo.  There is really no wrong way to make it.  Each household has its own variation.  Each region got its own added ingredients or combination, but the basic recipe is the same.  Once you become familiar with the recipe you will start to adjust the amount of the ingredients and may add extra ingredients to suit your and your family's taste.  The older recipes were white since they were made before soy sauce was introduced to the Philippines.  You can also cook the chicken, pork and beef mixed together.  Don't eat the bay leaf and watch out for those peppercorns.  Do put the sauce on the rice, it taste awesome.

Scoop Knife

Here is my version of a crook/spoon knife that I saw online.  It was a close loop blade, but it was only one blade.  I thought it might be more useful if you have two blades.  One big scoop blade for removing the majority of the wood and a smaller scoop knife for intricate work.  It also lend itself into making melon balls.

Friction Fire - Hearth Board Holder

This is one version of the hearth board holder.


Hearth Board Holder Design

This hearth board design allow for compact carry while camping or bushcrafting.  It gives the user the option of changing the heart board insert to maximize the chance of creating embers.  Since one hearth board insert is used, the rest of the boards can be kept in a safe dry place.  It should allow smaller pieces of wood to be used as hearth board, if bigger pieces are not available.

Spindle Body - The spindle body can be one long piece or in sections for portability.

Spindle Insert - The spindle insert can be made from cottonwood, pine, willow or any soft wood that can produce ember.

Thumb Loop - The optional thumb loop and insert helps in creating an ember.
